Mackay Info

Mackay is situated in tropical north queensland approximately 330km north of Rockhampton, Qld Australia.

History

The Pioneer Valley area was discovered by Captain John Mackay and settled in 1862. Early settlers brought sugarcane to the area and Mackay quickly became Qld's largest sugar producing region and remains so today. The Port of Mackay serves the sugar and agriculture industries and a variety of mining in the surrounding region.

Attractions

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens

The newly developed gardens were opened in 2003 and showcase the different cultures from throughout the region through a diverse range of vegetation and overlooks the expansive South Sea Island Lagoons and Meeting House. There is also a cafe and some fantastic birdwatching available at the lagoons.

Eungella National Park

Located about 80km west of Mackay is the pristine Eungella National Park. Situated high above the surrounding plains, this mist-shrouded and forest-clad mountain refuge is one of Queensland’s most ecologically diverse parks with 860 plant species and a wonderful variety of wildlife.The area contains camping, picnic/day use areas and dozens of walking tracks through the beautiful rainforest featuring some spectacular swimming holes and waterfalls.

Laguna Whitsunday’s

Laguna Whitsunday's is home to one of Australia's greatest golfing treasures: The Turtle Point Golf Course. Turtle Point has been declared one of Australia's most significant modern golf courses and in 2005 was voted the Number One Public Access Golf Course in the country
