Mackay is situated in tropical north queensland approximately 330km north of Rockhampton, Qld Australia. HistoryThe Pioneer Valley area was discovered by Captain John Mackay and settled in 1862. Early settlers brought sugarcane to the area and Mackay quickly became Qld's largest sugar producing region and remains so today. The Port of Mackay serves the sugar and agriculture industries and a variety of mining in the surrounding region. Located about 80km west of Mackay is the pristine Eungella National Park. Situated high above the surrounding plains, this mist-shrouded and forest-clad mountain refuge is one of Queensland’s most ecologically diverse parks with 860 plant species and a wonderful variety of wildlife.The area contains camping, picnic/day use areas and dozens of walking tracks through the beautiful rainforest featuring some spectacular swimming holes and waterfalls.
